What Is a Bidet Toilet Seat?
Here is a little bit more information about what these great toilet seat add-ons are all about.
A Brief History of the Bidet
The Bidet cleaning bowl was thought to originate in France all the way back in the 1700s. So they have been around for a lot longer than most people think. A spray pump was added to these early versions of Bidet in 1750. The first Bidet toilet came about in the early 1900s and the first bidet toilet seat was introduced in 1960. The improved and electronic version of the bidet toilet seat (called the ‘washlet’) was introduced in the 1980s.
Despite their many health and sanitary benefits, not all cultures have readily accepted these devices. Perhaps the place that has taken them longer than most to be accepted in the United States of all places. That is rapidly starting to change as people there are becoming more familiar with the benefits of using bidet-style toilet seats.
What Exactly Is a Bidet Toilet Seat?
A bidet toilet seat in its most basic form is a toilet seat that has the ability to cleanse your private areas after you urinate or do a poo. There were developed with a specific purpose in mind to clean the private areas of your body without having to put your hands in this area of the body to do it. This is supposed to keep germs from spreading from your private area onto your hands and vice versa.
In order to be able to cleanse a bidet toilet needs a freshwater source and a means to direct that water to the areas of your body that need to be cleaned after you use the restroom. Most bidet toilet seats do this by means of special jets that are integrated into the toilet seat and some go a step further and also incorporate an additional spray wand to help with the cleansing process too.
2 Different Types of Bidet Toilet Seats
There are two main types of bidet toilet seats that are available in the modern plumbing marketplace. Here is a brief overview of each:
In this type of bidet, the seat simply works of the incoming pressure of the plumbing supply line. They will have special jets or directional spray nozzles built right into the toilet seat. It is also not uncommon to see a wand attached to them.
These tend to be by far the least expensive type of bidet and they also have the advantage of not being as prone to breaking down because they are fairly simple devices that just redirect water pressure onto the parts of your body where it is needed. The biggest drawbacks with them are they only spray cold water on your body and they are totally dependent on the water pressure in your home’s plumbing line.
Electronic bidets or washlets as they are known are very sophisticated electrical devices. There is a lot of technology incorporated into them. Most people who are not familiar with electric bidets are amazed at all the different things a toilet seat can do. It is not uncommon to see such things as heated seats, water temperature controls, and bottom dryers built right into these devices. Many also have water pressure boosting capabilities, different types of water spray settings, nightlights, and deodorizing fans integrated into their design. Some can even be programmable to suit the needs of individual users.
By far the number one reason that people choose electric bidets is that of the comfort they offer as you use your toilet. Some of the drawbacks with electric bidets are they can be very pricey and they also need a dedicated electrical line hooked up to them to run all the electronic gadgets on them.
Benefits of Using a Bidet Toilet Seat
As people start to become more familiar with bidets and how they work they are starting to realize all the benefits of bidets. There is a whole host of personal and environmental benefits that come from bidet toilet seat use. Here are a few of the best reasons to add a bidet toilet seat onto your commode at home.
4 Reasons to Buy a Bidet Toilet Seat
There are few things in this world that pose more of a health threat than human feces. Every time you put your hand in that region of the body you are risking spreading germs, disease, bacteria, and other things that are detrimental to your health. When you use a bidet to clean yourself with after taking a poo your hand never has to come in close proximity to that region of your body again.
When your toilet has a bidet seat attached to it going to the bathroom becomes much more than just a natural body function. Bidet toilet seats set a new standard in bathroom comfort. They make going to the bathroom a much more pleasurable experience. This is especially true when that bidet toilet seat is an electrically powered washlet.
Such things as heated seats, warm water, air drying, and massage sprays make going to the bathroom a much more pleasurable experience.
Each year millions of trees are turned into toilet paper. Much of this can be eliminated simply by rinsing yourself off with a bidet after you have a bowel movement. Many people will argue that you will then wastewater but that is not true. Water is a much more renewable resource than trees are. Trees also add oxygen and have other environmental benefits too.
Less Wear and Tear on Your Plumbing
Using toilet paper not only harms the environment but it harms your plumbing, sewer, and septic system too. Toilet paper is one of the main contributors to clogs in plumbing. It forms a paste-like substance when it gets wet that can really cause bad clogs when it combines with other things that get disposed of in a toilet.
When the openings in your plumbing system start to clog and get smaller that same plumbing system starts to get stressed. This can cause cracks, fittings to loosen, and pipes to back up leak where they should not. With a bidet toilet seat, no toilet paper goes into the system.

Best Bidet Toilet Seat Reviews (Updated List)
1. TOTO Washlet S300e Elongated Bidet Toilet Seat
Here is a bidet toilet seat that is loaded with many features and is perfect if you have an elongated shaped toilet. That is no much this seat can’t do when it comes to providing you with bathroom creature comforts. It even has some sanitation features which keep the seat itself clean in between uses.
This luxury toilet seat has just about everything you can think of that can be added to a seat. It will wash you in the front and back, the seat is heated and it will even dry you off after washing you. There are programmable settings for two people and it even automatically sprays deodorizer as you sit on it too.
We were all pretty impressed that most of the features that this bidet toilet seat has can be remote controlled. That makes it pretty convenient to use, to say the least. The remote will also turn on and off some of the automatic functions.
This toilet seat seems to have a tight fir around some elongated shaped toilets. Make sure you check it on yours before starting the installation in case you need to return it. The seat opening is also smaller than normal because of all the features.

2. BioBidet BLISS BB-2000 Elongated Bidet Toilet Seat
BioBidet specializes in making bidet toilet seats so you know they are one of the best at it. This remotely controlled toilet seat certainly does not disappoint. It has so many features it will definitely give you a whole new comfort level when going to the bathroom.
Using this seat is like going through an automatic car wash. It will clean you, rinse you and even dry you off with the built-in air dryer. It has an endless supply of heated water and automatically deodorizes the air as you use your toilet too. A big bonus of this seat is it installs fairly easy too.
The spray wand on this toilet does more than just wash you. It actually can be set to wash or deliver a pulsating massage as you clean yourself. You can even add air to the water stream for a different feel.
We were not totally thrilled with the looks of the plumbing hookup. This does not seem like it would be a hard fix. Not being able to turn off the built-in nightlight might annoy some users too.
3. BioBidet USPA 6800 Adjustable Bidet Toilet Seat
Here is another innovative bidet toilet seat from specialty maker BioBidet. It is a little more budget-friendly than some of the other model bidet toilet seats that they make. Now just about anyone can enjoy the comfort that these premium toilet add-ons have to offer.
This remotely controlled luxury toilet seat has a variety of different stream placements and wand settings to help rinse you off after doing your business. It will even heat your seat for you as you use it and supply you with warm water to do it too.
This toilet not only has great bidet functions but it has some other nice perks that come with it too. One of them is its cost-cutting energy-saving feature. Another is the fact that BioBidet has seen fit to cover this unique toilet seat with a full three-year warranty.
As good as this toilet seat is there are still some changes that can be made. The back cleaning spray can be a little too powerful and it is to the noisy side too. We were a little surprised that it has just a small warm water supply too.
4. TOTO Washlet C100 Elongated Bidet Toilet Seat
We just reviewed BioBidet’s budget-friendly bidet toilet seat model and now we will take a look at Toto’s budget-friendly model too. This seat gives you a whole lot for the money that you spend on it. It even will give you the convenience of being remote control operated.
This toilet seat has it all. Multiple wash settings, water temperature adjustments and even a drying feature. The toilet itself is very easy to work and the seat can be nicely preheated too before using it.
Not only does this bidet keep the person that uses it clean and sanitary but it helps your toilet bowl stay cleaner and more sanitary too. It has a pre-mist feature that lightly sprays the toilet bowl before you use it so not contents can stick easily to the inside of the bowl.
The fan feature on this toilet seems to be a little noisy and we think this can be a little detracting from an otherwise good bathroom experience. The buttons on the remote control are a membrane-type so we think they may develop cracks in them over time.
5. ALPHA JX Elongated Bidet Toilet Seat
This is a pretty complete model bidet toilet seat that Alpha Bidet has designed. It is loaded with features that make this a true premium model toilet seat. You will have trouble finding a better remote-controlled bidet toilet seat in the marketplace.
It features a front and back tankless warm water rinsing system and it can also dry you when you are done the washing. Most of the temperature and pressure settings on this model toilet seat are fully adjustable too. Best of all these features are all very simple to operate.
There was more than one thing that we really liked about this model bidet toilet seat. Many manufacturers have nightlights that are always on but this one is sensor activated so it turns off when the light is present in the bathroom. We also like its unlimited warm water supply.
Just a few things that we feel need improvement here and some will say we are being nitpicky. First, the remote control is not backlit so it’s a little hard to read in darker bathrooms. The duckbill shape of the toilet seat lid is not very aesthetically pleasing either.
6. TOTO SW2034-01 Elongated C100 Washlet
Here is another budget-friendly model bidet toilet seat from Toto. This luxury toilet seat will definitely enhance any bathroom experience for those that use it. It comes complete with a fully functional remote control for added convenience too.
This toilet will clean all the private areas of your body and do it using one of several different wash settings. It has a heated seat that can be removed for cleaning and the very hygienic self-cleaning wand is a nice touch too. This toilet seat can also be heated for added comfort during the colder months.
Simple to use is the best way to describe this bidet toilet seat. We think some companies put so many features on their bidet toilet seats that it’s overkill. This one is scaled back on features and very easy to use because of it.
The seat itself on this model seemed a little bit to the smaller side for us. Although the deodorizer and fan combination is a nice touch it is slightly noisy when operating.
7. SmartBidet SB-1000 Electric Bidet Seat
Smart has designed a bidet toilet seat here that is specially made for rounded front toilets. That means many homes with older style toilets can get all the benefits a bidet toilet seat offers too.
This bidet toilet model offers such things to the user as a heated seat, many adjustable spray settings and it will even help dry you after you are done the washing. The remote control is very easy to use and this system even has a built-in water filter too.
The cleaning nozzle that is built into this toilet seat you can do a lot of things with. It has several different spray settings including a pulsating massage. The nozzle itself is slightly adjustable too so it easily accommodates different users.
This is a great toilet seat but since it is rounded it makes the toilet opening a little on the small side. Also, the drying vent could be repositioned or another one added to offer a more complete drying experience.
8. BioBidet Aura A7 Intelligent Bidet Toilet Seat
BioBidet has another innovative yet affordable bidet toilet seat with this model. Even though it is budget-friendly, it still incorporates all the important features that a bidet toilet seat should have right into it.
With this model bidet toilet seat, you can clean yourself with the handy spray wand or you can choose to do it with one of several built-in spray choices. You can control the pressure of the water and the style of spray you wash with too. The seat is temperature-controlled and this seat has a nice energy-saving setting too.
Everything on this toilet seat is adjustable as far as water pressure and temperatures go. That makes it really comfortable for all of the different people that will be using it. Even the temperature of the seat itself can be controlled.
There are a few concerns we had with this toilet. Even on the lowest pressure setting the spray seems to still be pretty intense. The seat is also nearly impossible to sit on with its steep angle slope.
9. TOTO Washlet S350e Elongated Bidet Toilet Seat
Many people describe bidet toilet seats as a life-changing bathroom experience. Bidet toilet seats that work like this one are the very reason why they make that statement. There are so many features on this toilet seat we would need several pages to describe them all.
It has an auto-open/close lid, convenient his and her warm water streams, and an easy to use the wand for spraying too. There is a built-in air dryer, seat warmer, and a very neat bowl pre-misting feature that will help it stay cleaner. Many of the features it has can be controlled by the remote control that comes with it too.
There are a couple of features that we really thought were great with this nice bidet toilet seat. For one, it has an unlimited supply of warm water to cleanse you. Perhaps the coolest feature it has it the nightlight that illuminates the bathroom with a dim glow when it’s dark.
The fan unit on this toilet seat works great but is a little to the noisy side. Some of the automatic features can be a nuisance at times too because they will work when you are doing something else in the area of the toilet.
Bidet Toilet Seats Help Combat Health Issues
Here are some of the health benefits that people get from using a bidet-style toilet seat.
Make Feminine Hygiene Easier
Women tend to have more trouble keeping their private areas hygienic than men do because of the way their bodies work. When a woman uses the bathroom or is experiencing menstruation they often feel unclean at times. A woman wiping herself with toilet paper that feeling does not change much but when she cleans herself using a bidet toilet seat that clean feeling returns to her. That is because using a bidet is like showering that area of your body. Bidet use is even thought to help cut down on the chances a woman will experience a painful urinary tract infection.
Help Avoid Allergic Reactions/Skin Problems
If you are not using a bidet toilet seat in your bathroom then chances are you are using toilet paper to wipe yourself after taking a poo. However, there are many benefits to using bidets instead of toilet paper. Many people are allergic to or have a sensitivity to the dyes and perfumes in toilet tissue. This often time can cause irritating rashes or excessively dry skin. Some people also find toilet paper to be very abrasive to their skin when they use it. If you use a bidet toilet seat you can totally avoid using toilet paper if it causes your skin problems.
Reduce the Frequency of Hemorrhoids
People who have problems with recurring hemorrhoid conditions often find bidet toilet seats to be a real lifesaver. Rubbing around your anus with toilet paper has long been thought to be a key contributor to the onset of hemorrhoids and the amount of time they last. Using a gentle spray of water to clean this area is much less prone to cause hemorrhoids and add to the length of time they stay there.
Help Seniors Overcome Movement Restrictions
As you age and your movement becomes more restricted it can be hard to wash around the private areas of your body. This can lead to many health issues if this area is not sanitized properly. A bidet toilet seat takes the worry out of this process because a senior does not have to contort themselves to clean in this region of the body any longer. They can be a huge asset to any senior that is starting to have restricted movements because of arthritis or any other health condition.
Bidet Toilet Seat Buying Guide and Shopping Tips
Electric or Non-electric
We already talked about electric powered versus non-electric bidet toilet seats. You will have to decide if you want all the extra features you can get with an electrically powered bidet toilet seat or will you settle for fewer features and less cost with a non-electric bidet toilet seat.
This is a key feature that is built into most bidet toilet seats. It gives you the ability to place a gentle or vigorous cleansing spray of water in any place you feel you need it. Look for one that can adjust both the water flow and the feel of that water against your skin.
Directional Jets, Vents, and Nozzles
Just like it’s important to be able to have a bidet wand that you can place water anyplace you want, it is also important to be able to direct the water flow from the static jets, vents, and nozzles built into a bidet toilet seat. The more adjustable a bidet toilet seat jet, vent, or nozzle is the more accommodating the bidet seat is for different size users.
Heated seats really add much to the whole bidet toilet seat experience. There is a big difference in comfort level between getting on a cold toilet seat on a winter morning and getting on a pre-heated toilet seat on that same winter morning. It is a big bonus that most electric bidet toilet seats offer.
Air drying capability is a wonderful feature that many electronic bidet toilet seats have to offer. Just like using toilet paper on your skin can be harsh for you so can using a towel to dry yourself off. Air drying is not only convenient it also prevents chafing and helps keep your skin from drying out.
Remote controls help you get the most out of any electrical bidet toilet seat. They also help to make it an almost totally hands-free experience. You can control jets, water pressure, air drying, nightlights, and most other bidet toilet seat features with them. They are great to have if you are given the option of getting a bidet seat package that includes one.
Warranties are nice things to have with a mechanical device such as a bidet toilet seat. This is especially true if it is an electric model toilet seat with many operating features. The more money you spend on a bidet toilet seat the more peace of mind you will get a longer warranty. A warranty is also a good indicator of how much confidence a manufacturer has in the quality of their product. Usually the longer a warranty a manufacturer offers the better they think their product is built.
